September 11, 2009
Thousand Oaks - The La Reina cross country team began its quest to defend its section and state titles Friday, as the team opened the 2009 season at the Seaside Cross Country Invitational held at San Buenaventura State Beach. The day saw a new school course record, a number of personal bests, and for many, their first ever cross country racing experience!
Sarah Pearson led all Regents on the newly measured 3.11 mile course, placing 2nd in the Senior Girls race in a time of 18:10.11. Sarah's time was the 3rd fastest overall time on the day, and set a new La Reina school course record.
Competing in the same Senior Girls race, Katie Kavetsky improved leaps and bounds from her performance here a year ago, running to a very impressive 19:51.10, and a 17th place finish.
Gabby Lowry also showed she was one to be reckoned with this season, leading all juniors placing 48th in 21:19.76!
Rachel Brajkovich, Lauren Hearne, and Kelly Reinke each had dominating performances in the Sophomore Girls race, as all three girls finished in the top 40! Rachel led the sophomore contingent, placing 3rd in 19:24.49. Following close behind, Lauren stepped up her game, running an outstanding 20:33.15, and a 15th place finish for her efforts. Kelly, competing in her first ever cross country race, impressed many with her 40th place finish in a time of 21:57.54.
The freshmen also got their first taste of cross country competition, with Hayley Walke producing La Reina’s top 9th grade finish, placing 26th in a fine 22:52.45! Kelly Chow followed in close pursuit, finishing 42nd in 23:23.79, while Ally Adams also found herself cracking the 24 minute barrier, running 23:49.83, placing 61st.
