Philosophy of English Department

The English Department at La Reina High School provides a strong, academic and traditional curriculum that reflects Catholic/Christian values. Students read the classics, write analytically and persuasively, learn the standards of written English and discover their personal voice.

Department Goals

1. To help students become discriminating readers
2. To teach students to communicate effectively through both the written and the spoken word
3. To teach students the basic skills of expository writing
4. To develop students' mastery of the English language
5. To develop students' creativity and imagination
6. To develop students' vocabulary

Department Members

Department-wide standards:

1. Essays should be written in blue or black ink.
2. Essays should be double-spaced and folded lengthwise.
3. The heading should include the student's name, the date, the course and the period taught.
4. In some cases, students will be asked to verify that the writing is their own. This includes, but is not limited to, the journalism assignment and any assignment that requires research.
