Philosophy of Foreign Language Department

The Foreign Language department of La Reina High School believes that the knowledge of another language is invaluable in every aspect of life, particularly in the modern world with its multi-cultural dimensions. A student who knows a second, or even a third, language is a better citizen because she is sensitive to other cultures and civilizations and will hopefully realize that the knowledge she obtains is instrumental in the promotion of the Catholic/Christian goals, as well as world solidarity.

Training in a foreign language increases a student's capacity for analytical thought and written and oral communication. Within the framework of successive courses of study, the student will be given an opportunity to grow in appreciation of the language usage, culture, and its relevance to other disciplines.

It is important that the foreign language classroom experience be authentic. To this end, a student will be immersed in the target language to the maximum extent possible.   Thus, student participation is an important element in the foreign language classroom.  The higher the level, the more the student will be expected to participate:  students will be required to provide answers beyond the textbook answer and use the target language as a tool for communication.

Department Goals

As an outgrowth of the philosophy of La Reina High School and the Foreign Language Department, the department seeks to develop young women who:
  1. Develop Catholic/Christian values by fostering tolerance and respect through the instruction of multiculturalism and its accompanying issues.
  2. Develop the receptive language skills of listening, reading comprehension, and written and oral communication.
  3. Use the target language by at least 60 to 100%, increasing as the course level changes and increases.
  4. Gain insight into the structure, history, and vocabulary of her own language.
  5. (For teachers) Employ proficiency standards for assessing the major accomplishments of the students and programs.
