Messages to Parents from Mrs. Cecilia Coe

Test Messaging and Lost and Found Items

We are requesting your help in resolving two problems which affect student learning.  Text messaging during the school day is one of the problems.  Although school policy states that students are not to use cell phones during the school day, we are not naïve enough to believe that all students follow this rule.  Also, some parents and students have reported that they have heard about or seen students text messaging during class.  I’m sure you would agree that students distracted by texting are not learning.

How can you help?  Review your daughter’s cell phone log, noting times of text messaging.  Talk with her about keeping her attention focused during the school day and the importance of following school policies.  You might also consider checking with your cell phone provider to see if the text messaging capability can be disabled during school hours.

The school administration is currently considering measures, including the confiscation of cell phones and the assessment of fines to claim them, in order to deal with this problem.  Thank you for helping us work together so that student learning is paramount.

The second issue is related to Lost and Found.  The number of items in Lost and Found without names is staggering.  Please know that all belonging with names are returned to the owner.  However, the great majority of items have no student identification.  Please work with your daughter so that her books, clothing, and other items are clearly labeled.

Thank you for being partners with us in your daughter’s education!

Flu Season

As you are aware, this season has seen an increase in flu-like symptoms, and more people, especially children, are sick with the flu, including H1N1.  The La Reina community is no exception.  Please be assured that we are doing everything we can to keep your daughters healthy.  Hand sanitizers are located in every classroom, as well as the cafeteria, library, and the main office.  Students are encouraged to wash their hands frequently.  The facilities staff is committed to keeping classrooms sanitized as often as needed.

Parents, please keep your daughter at home if she is sick.  Individual with symptoms should stay home for at least 24 hours after they have no fever following discontinued use of fever-reducing medicines.  If a student has been diagnosed with influenza by a doctor, the school requires a signed release from the diagnosing physician before returning to school.  Teachers are also requested to send sick students to the office.

Please know that we are in communication with the medical community and the Ventura County Public Health Department.  We will contact you if you we receive new recommendations regarding school procedures in dealing with influenza.

We are committed to providing a healthy and safe learning environment for your children.

Cafeteria Accounts

Please know that we appreciate the patience of the school community as we work through this year’s changes in the cafeteria.  Our ultimate goal is to do all we can to ensure that each student is able to pick up and pay for her lunch in the least amount of time.

With this goal in mind, the following payment options for cafeteria food will be effective Monday, October 5:

The preferred method of payment is through EZSchoolPay.  Establishing accounts with EZSchoolPay allows parents to use a credit card and to add money using the Internet at any time of the day or night.  It will also allow parents the opportunity to monitor their daughter’s food choices and money on the account.  (Please note:  We believed that this feature was already available to our parents.  We have learned recently from EZSchoolPay that the tentative date for this feature to be available is November 30.)

The second option is to deposit money with the Business Office.  Business Office personnel will accept checks (only) on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays of each week.  These check amounts will be credited to the students’ cafeteria accounts by the following Monday.  Thus, funds deposited in the Business Office will not be immediately available for your daughter’s use.  Please note that for cafeteria accounts the Business Office will only accept check deposits.

The third option is for students to use cash when checking out at the registers.  If this is your choice, then please note that cashiers will accept only bills of $5 or more.  Any unspent money will be credited to your daughter’s cafeteria account.  No coin or $1 dollar bills will be accepted.

Thank you again for your patience as we work toward providing the best possible service for your daughter.

Selling Your Used Texts

There will no longer be a Used Book Sale during the summer.  Instead, this year La Reina will be participating in MBS Direct’s (our online bookstore) EZ Drop Buyback program.  This program will allow students to sell used books back to MBS Direct.  Students will be able to create a quote online for the books they would like to sell.  Follow this link to a flier from MBS Direct for detailed directions on how to create a quote.

On June 10th from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., students should bring two copies of their quote along with their books to the La Reina Library where they will be collected for shipping to MBS Direct.  Selling used books to MBS will provide other students with more used copies for purchase for the 2009-2010 school year.

Students who are unable to participate in the EZ Drop Buyback event on campus can still make an online quote for texts and ship them directly to MBS.

For further information on selling used textbooks, contact Ms. Heather Neidenbach at 805-495-6494, ext. 308.
