

La Reina High School offers a variety of art classes and extra-curricular art opportunities:
Art 8
This course is an introduction to visual art. The students become familiar with the fundamentals of art through variety of media and techniques. Students learn about the elements of art, principles of design, and are introduced to creating and recognizing historical art pieces. This class is excellent preparation for those students planning to take Art I.
Art I-C
A beginning level art course, Art I has students explore and develop skills based on the elements of art and principles of design. The academics of art are explored through a variety of practical experiences: basic drawing, painting, design, graphics and collage. The class incorporates creative expression in technique. Students are also exposed to the process of critiquing art as well as art history as it relates to various projects. A sketchbook is required for this course.
Art II-C
This is an intermediate art course designed for the serious art student interested in building a portfolio or continuing on to AP Studio Art. Art history, self-expression and aesthetics will be incorporated into work of various media including drawing, painting, and two-dimensional design. Course evaluation is based on student performance, critiques, sketchbooks and portfolio presentation.
Art III-C
This course is an advanced level art course for students who are interested in continuing to develop their art skills and self-expression in an effort to expand their portfolios. Students enrolled in this course will use gained knowledge to explore advanced design concepts of Adobe Illustrator, Printmaking techniques and practical applications of mixed media compositions. Students will continue to do weekly sketchbook assignments and will be creating at least one piece for exhibit in local student art competitions.
Sculpture A-C
This course is an exploration into three-dimensional art forms. Students explore art history and self-expression to create sculpture in a variety of forms. Materials may include: paper, plaster, wood, cardboard, wire, and found objects.
Sculpture B-C
Working with clay is the emphasis of this course. Students are introduced to the historical and practical applications of clay sculpture and ceramics. Projects include: additive and subtractive sculpture, slab construction, the creation of a traditional Native American coil pottery, as well as learning how to work with clay on the potter’s wheel, under-glaze and glazing techniques.
Photography
Students are taught to see more than just what “meets the eye” in the creation of fine art black & white photography. The process and methods of photography are stressed. Lectures, slide presentations, videos and DVD’s will introduce students to the history of photography and photojournalism. The fundamentals of camera operations and darkroom techniques are taught along with the investigation of stylistic and conceptual concerns. Students participate in critiques of their own work and the work of their peers. Although it is not required, it is preferred that each student have access to a 35mm, Single Lens Reflex adjustable camera.
Studio Art-AP
Advanced Placement Studio Art is meant for the serious, self-motivated art student. This course is designed to assist the students with their preparation of a portfolio that meets the college-level standards for Advanced Placement set by the College Board. A portfolio in slide format will be sent to the AP Board in early May. Students must submit their portfolio to obtain the weighted AP grade. This studio environment requires discipline, a sense of personal engagement and problem solving skills. This is a time-intensive class, requiring daily work at home, on weekends and projects to be done the summer prior to enrollment in the class. Students who want to be an Art major in college are encouraged to take this course. Students are asked to purchase their own supplies for this course, and be aware of the additional expenses of purchasing slide film and developing costs, as well as the AP testing fee.
Extra-curricular art opportunities include: Art Club, Photography Club and Anime Club
