Academic Decathlon Shines in Debut Competition

Academic Decathlon Team 2018La Reina's Academic Decathlon team competed in their first competition this spring, placing 2nd overall in Ventura County and qualifying as a Wild Card to move on the California State Competition from March 23-25, 2018.

As a team, La Reina placed in the top three in 10 events, earning 1st place in Speech and Literature, 2nd place in Super Quiz and Economics, and 3rd place in Essay, Art, Math, Science, and Social Science.

Individually, every team member of earned at least one medal:

  • Jenna Matus '18 earned the highest individual score in all of Ventura County, earning her a $500 scholarship, and six gold medals (Essay, Math, Music, Economics, Science, and Art), a silver medal in Literature, and a bronze in Social Science.
  • Hannah Bartels '18 earned the second highest Scholastic, and a gold in Speech, silver in Economics and Social Sciences, and bronze in Essay and Math.
  • Alexandra Clark '19 earned the second highest score as an alternate, and gold in Music and Literature, silver in Social Science and Art, and a bronze in Speech.
  • Emma Cowdrey '19 earned a bronze in Science.
  • Sarah Fournell '19 earned silver in Music, Essay, and Literature, and a bronze in Social Science.
  • Matiana Gajda '19 earned a gold in Speech.
  • Erin Kistler '19 earned gold in Literature and silver in Social Science and Art.
  • Cydney Maxwell '18 earned a silver in Math and bronze in Economics and Social Science.
  • Sophia Perida '18 earned a bronze in Economics.

Coach Nathaniel Jones was very proud of the team's performance, saying "Winning 2nd place and qualifying to go on to the State competition is a huge accomplishment. They put in countless hours of preparation, staying late after school, giving up weekends, reading and re-reading thousands of pages of material, teaching each other difficult subjects like math, science, and economics, practicing speeches and interviews and essays, and taking dozens of practice tests. We are very excited to be headed to Sacramento in March to compete at the State Competition."
