- Student Life
On Wednesday, September 19, Period X Vocal Arts (PXVA) participated in LA Opera’s Opera Prep program at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.
La Reina was one of just seven schools in the greater Los Angeles Area chosen to participate in this program. Students attended a pre-concert talk with Louisa Muller, the stage director of "Don Carlo." Muller was joined by LA Opera Musical Director and production Maestro, James Conlon.
Students learned all about these fascinating artists, their careers and their interpretation of "Don Carlo." They then watched the final dress rehearsal of the opera starring world famous, Placido Domingo. Students were captivated by the incredible music, sets and costumes of Verdi’s epic masterwork. For the vast majority of students this was their first encounter with opera. Many were surprised to discover correlations between "Don Carlo" and their European history classes, while others where fascinated by the underlying themes woven into the narrative. It was a long night (the opera was over three hours long), but students were riveted and left the Pavilion buzzing from this amazing evening of world class sights and sounds.
The LA Opera experience is the first in a series of musical encounters that PXVA will have this year. They are looking forward to hearing a top-notch jazz concert at the Soroyan Center of the Arts in Northridge and seeing the New West Symphony play at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza. Many will also be traveling to New York City to perform in the “Scarlett Pimpernel” at Lincoln Center with a New York City orchestra and professional broadway cast. While in New York, singers will be stopping in on the “Great White Way,” to see an authentic Broadway production.
