DEAN OF MISSION MESSAGE
November 1st seems to be the official start of the “holiday season” for many families. BUT as the festivities approach, preparations and family gatherings can become overwhelming for some of us. We might tend to focus on the negatives ("don’t sit Uncle Harry next to Aunt Fran," "the pie did not bake!," etc.) instead of looking at the positives.
This truly is the time for being grateful for our blessings, and if we have a hard time thanking God for the big things in life, we might want to look at our smaller, everyday blessings: a hot cup of coffee or tea to start the day, the changing color of leaves on the tree outside our window, an unexpected call from a friend or relative. These are blessings, too. Let’s savor them and tell God we are thankful. There is a saying of Meister Eckhart that I appreciate: “If the only prayer you ever say in your entire life is ‘Thank you’, that will be enough.”
Have a blessed weekend,
Sr. Rebekah Kennedy, SND

ON-CAMPUS ACADEMIC SUPPORT
Students: to help you get extra support, we initiated a new schedule this year which includes the X Block. X Block is designed to provide students the opportunity to get support from their classroom teacher during the actual school day. During this time students may stay in their study hall and work, sign out to meet with their teacher, or go to the library to study. Students may also seek tutoring support from the National Honor Society (NHS). The students in NHS sign-up to tutor in a subject that they excel in and are able to support their fellow peers. If you would like to get tutoring support from NHS, they should speak with Mrs. Gersten in the library, who will match students with an NHS student for tutoring. Students, please take advantage of X Block and the opportunities it provides to support you in your studies.

FREE DRESS FUNDRAISER
Tuesday, October 30, will be the NJHS (National Junior Honor Society)-sponsored free dress fundraiser. La Reina’s chapter of NJHS has partnered with the St. Julie Billart Catholic Church food pantry which serves dozens of families in need in the Conejo Valley. Bring a non-perishable food donation to 5th period classes and you may wear free dress. Multiple donations are encouraged. NJHS thanks you for your support of their service project. The wish list food items include: box cereal, peanut butter, jam, pasta sauce, pancake mix, syrup, oatmeal, mac and cheese, ketchup, and canned tuna.
HAPPY HALLOWEEN
Students are invited to dress in appropriate costumes for Halloween on October 31. At lunch the senior class will host the annual "Trunk or Treat" for all grade levels. Students are encouraged to bring a small bag to trick or treat in the senior parking lot during lunch.
Students must be in an identifiable costume or in their school uniform; this is not a free dress day. All costumes must meet free dress guidelines and students must be in closed-toe, closed-heel shoes. Any students in inappropriate costumes or in free dress will be asked to change into a La Reina uniform.
Student costumes should not include any of the following:
- Blood or disrespect of human life
- Weapons of any kind
- Offensive portrayals of any group of people
- Face masks
- Religious figures (Satan, Jesus, the Pope, nuns, etc.)
- If students dye their hair, hair color must be back to a natural color by Thursday.
JUNIOR RING CEREMONY - November 8
The Junior Ring Ceremony will take place November 8 at 6 p.m. in the gym. All families are invited to attend this ceremony celebrating the Class of 2020 as they become upperclasswomen. All junior rings must be submitted to Mrs. Austin (in a clearly labelled, secure container) no later than October 31.
YOUTH LEADERSHIP PROGRAM
Applications for the Youth Leadership Program sponsored by the Conejo/Las Virgenes Future Foundation are now being accepted. All students in grades 9-12 are eligible. Students accepted into this program will have the opportunity to develop effective leadership skills while learning more about their communities. The areas covered include: introduction to leadership, local government, law enforcement, health services, business, and more! Contact karen@clvff.org with questions. Click this link for more information: Youth Leadership Program Information and Application.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO VOLUNTEER?
Human Resources Coordinator Mrs. Cheri Barrera is looking forward to meeting future volunteers so she can give them the necessary paperwork to get started. All of our volunteers who work among students are required to have the following information on file: Virtus training certificate, fingerprinting results, current TB results, and CPR training (if coaching). Please click here to email Mrs. Barrera.
The Archdiocese fingerprinting team will be at St. Paschal Baylon from 12:00 - 7:00 p.m. on October 24. You must have an appointment, no walk-ins are allowed. To sign up for Virtus training or fingerprinting at St. Paschal Baylon, please click here.
MOMS IN PRAYER
Moms in Prayer meets every Monday from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. in the La Reina Chapel. No experience necessary! Join us in praying for our school, our students, our faculty, and our staff. All religions are welcome. Fun Fact: Moms in Prayer is an international organization and almost every school in the Conejo Valley is covered by groups of praying Moms!
LA REINA FUND
A gift to the La Reina Fund supports excellence throughout our school. This year, Jennifer Ardy was honored by the University of Notre Dame Club of Ventura for her outstanding commitment to education and was awarded an opportunity to attend the Excellence in Teaching Conference at Notre Dame.
It’s this commitment to a transformative education that makes La Reina so unique.
You can help ensure that La Reina is able to maintain and grow through the La Reina Fund. Please click here to support our school. Thank you!
FREE FOR LUNCH?
Chef Cameron is looking for additional Virtus-trained parent volunteers to help out in the cafeteria as cashiers, during the lunch rush from 11:20 - 11:50 a.m.. All volunteers receive a free lunch and/or sweet treat during their shift. Please click here to sign up for a shift.
ATTENDANCE
All absences need to be reported by 9:30 a.m. each day that your daughter is out of school. A parent/guardian must report the absence to the main office, even if your daughter has already notified her teachers in advance of upcoming absences. Call 805-495-6494 ext. 1000 with your absence reports or any questions, or email attendance@lareina.com.
Be sure to include your student’s name, grade, date(s), reason (illness or other), and your best contact number. Note: Unverified absences will receive a phone call for verification. For further details regarding absences and tardies, please refer to pages 10-13 of the La Reina Student/Parent handbook located in the portals.
REUSABLE REVOLUTION
The Green Club is excited to announce that La Reina has launched its Reusable Revolution. Effective Thursday, October 18, the cafeteria will no longer sell single-use plastic water bottles.
